All Hallows Eve

Wednesday, October 29, 2025

The day dawned to reveal heavy grey clouds and a wet cityscape. A cold and raw morning. The overnight rain, which started around 3 am, seems to have ceased for the moment. The darling cats ask to go outside but then immediately refuse once they see the state of the weather.

The sun seems to rise later and later each day, with the change to Daylight Saving Time looming just around the corner. I could go on a rant about all the reasons why we should get rid of Daylight Saving Time, but I’m sure you’ve heard it many times before. Suffice it to say, I will be celebrating the day it finally goes away.

In other news, I went for a drive Monday and was glad to finally see some autumn foliage. However, much of it was muddy or mottled with brown. I think we needed a real cold snap to get more pure colors. Alas, I miss New England the most in the fall.

Another grey autumn day, soft misty clouds drape the landscape creating a quiet and soothing atmosphere. It’s like a giant cozy blanket has been drawn over the sky, gently whispering, “snooze a little bit longer, today is meant for rest.” After dealing with chronic illness for so long, I’ve come to love rainy and overcast days.

Everything slows down. The sky isn’t so bright that it hurts my eyes. The sound of raindrops is so calming, like a restorative healing balm for my mind. While rainy days often have a negative connotation in modern society, I think it’s worth taking a moment to reconsider this. We can’t control the weather, so rather than fight it, I have found its better to just accept the things we cannot change and direct our energy elsewhere. Rain is a necessary natural phenomenon, Mother Nature’s way of watering her garden (the trees need a drink sometimes!). Water is the most important nutrient, it is what allows life to flourish.

In a natural setting, it also provides some organically “scheduled” downtime. Now I realize, not everyone or every line of work has the luxury of taking it a bit slower on rainy days, but if you can afford to do so, maybe take it a little easier when the skies open up. We are humans, are not machines. We cannot go on indefinitely, nor should we try to. We not only deserve but need time for rest and recuperation. So I encourage you to try to find some joy, or perhaps a silver lining, during periods of wet weather.

The raindrop fairies are tracing delicate patterns on the window panes again. I’ve turned off all the lights but one, lighting candles for their comforting glow instead. Really leaning into the darkness of the coming season and making the most of the gifts that today brings. My checklist for a rainy autumn day:

  • Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks (or a Pumpkin Pie Latte from Coffee Emporium)
  • Fleece Zip-Up from UniQlo (so soft and warm!)
  • Cozy Blanket from Ikea (they don’t have mine anymore, blush pink faux fur)
  • Comfy Slippers from Amazon (Probably won’t repurchase, they run small)

Yes, I am one of those people who are hopelessly devoted to pumpkin spice lattes. Growing up, pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving was always my favorite. I love pumpkins, I love coffee, it cannot be helped. Call me basic, I don’t care, I like what I like. To be fair, you cannot go wrong with nutmeg and cinnamon in coffee. It’s just a delicious combination. What does your checklist look like? Would you include the PSL?

Friday the 31st

Although the rain has passed, it’s still quite damp out, making the glass fog up when I opened the balcony door. The sky is dotted with white and grey clouds that stretch off into the distance. Last night, temperatures dipped to 40°F but still no frost.

The Moon phase for today is Waxing Gibbous. Waxing meaning “to grow” from the Old English word “weaxan“. Gibbous meaning “hump-backed” from the Latin word “gibbosus“. This name was chosen since the moon has a convex appearance on both sides and is more than half illuminated, while also continuing to gain ground as it approaches fullness.1 Thus the Waxing Gibbous phase follows after the First Quarter and remains until the Moon is full. If the sky is clear, it may help to light your way this evening.

Everyone knows the best day for Halloween is Friday! Why? No school the next day! Oh and spooky reasons I suppose! These days, I can’t handle all that sugar, so someone will have to eat it for me. Hope everyone has a safe and successful trick-or-treat! Happy Halloween from Seasonfold!
