A short-lived winter wonderland graces Cincinnati.

Yesterday’s sunrise was a beautiful coral pink that melted into soft oranges and yellows. However, it was only momentary, and soon the sky was full of grey clouds that blocked out the sunlight. I thought for sure it would snow, even the radar indicated as much, but it never actually did.
Today is cold, windy (gusts of 35 to 45 mph) and I don’t want to go outside. Lately, I’ve noticed that the squirrels seem to be scurrying about more than usual. I have run into one on the sidewalk two days in a row. I’ve promised them that I don’t eat squirrels but they dash off regardless. Now that Thanksgiving is over, I put my mini-pumpkins out on the stone wall for them to eat. Hopefully they like a little snack!

I woke to find the world transformed and everything covered in a fluffy blanket of white. It looked like more than the 3″ we were predicted to get, so I opened the back door to measure. Plunged the ruler in to find roughly 4.5″ of snow. Amazing! This kind of snowfall almost never happens here, so I am delighted (although a bit sad I didn’t see a single flake falling).
The sun should be up all the way by now, but it’s still quite dark, perhaps I am being impatient. I want to take more pictures of this winter wonderland before it disappears. Even considering going for a walk. We shall see!
I did end up stepping outside for a few minutes and had a little fun tromping through the snow. Snapped a few photos but didn’t stay long. My boots really aren’t warm enough for snow. Another thing on the list of acquisitions for 2026, a good pair of winter boots. I welcome your recommendations, if you have any to offer.

It’s early. Too early in my opinion (6:01 am EST), especially for a Saturday. I am sad to report that much of the snow has melted despite the cold temperatures. It’s still dark outside as I write. There was a bird singing near my desk window for a brief moment. I wonder what kind of bird gets out of bed to sing at this hour? More on this in an upcoming post.
Several days back, I managed to talk myself into going for a walk. The sidewalk and regularly trod pathways were slippery with ice, formed largely by compacted snow. Most places hadn’t been shoveled properly. Fortunately, I finished my loop without incident. Not much to note aside from the weather as of late. More snow in the forecast for the coming weekend. Let’s see what we get.

Childhood Reminiscence
The snow that fell on December 2nd was the wetter kind that works wonderfully for making snowballs. For a moment, I was sorely tempted to make a snowman. I decided against it, as I wasn’t dressed adequately for those kinds of winter activities (no gloves on!). Not to mention, my body doesn’t endure the cold well these days, but it reminded me of how much I loved to play in the snow as a child. I recall spending hours sledding and crafting things out of snow. The sheer joy of hearing my school’s name on the cancelation list read over the radio. Yes, the radio! Or scrolling across the bottom of the TV screen. No smart phones in those days (I really shouldn’t be revealing my age like this…). Do you have fond memories of playing in the snow?
